Haveli Rasoi
— Heritage dining, Khadia (Old City)
Set inside a 200-year-old haveli in the old city, Haveli Rasoi serves the finest traditional Gujarati thali in Ahmedabad. The rotli is hand-rolled to order. The dal dhokli has been the same recipe for three generations. Nothing is written down.
The Mehta family has been running this haveli as a dining room since 1974, but the building itself is older — the carved wooden facade on Doshiwada ni Pol is from the 1820s. Dinner is served at two seatings: 7pm and 9pm. Reservations are technically required; arriving without one usually works anyway if you look friendly.
The thali changes with the season. In winter: undhiyu, bajra rotla, a thick methi dal. In summer: keri no ras, cold kadhi, thin bajri. The kitchen tracks the Gujarati calendar more closely than a temple. If you come in the month of Shravan, expect an entirely different menu — and no garlic, no onion.
