Champaner-Pavagadh
— UNESCO World Heritage, Panchmahal district
Two hours southeast, at the foot of a volcanic hill, sits one of the best-preserved pre-Mughal Islamic cities in India. Champaner has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004 and is still not crowded. The mosques, gates, and bastions are extraordinary. Climb Pavagadh hill at dusk.
The Jama Masjid at Champaner is a masterpiece of 15th-century architecture — a fusion of Hindu and Islamic forms that happened because the craftsmen who built it knew both. The sandstone carving is as fine as anything at Fatehpur Sikri. The crowd is a fraction.
The drive takes about 2 hours on NH-64. Stay at one of the heritage homestays near the site — two or three families have opened their old havelis to guests, and they are excellent. Day trip works but the evening light on the ruins justifies a night.
